Cover Art Project

As the semester comes to an end the students are finishing up their final project. They designed album covers for their favorite band or musicians. They picked their own musicians and studied the past album covers. After they were finished with their art they wrote an artist statement to the musician explaining their design choices.

Pinwheels 4 Peace

This is the third year we have participated in the Pinwheels for Peace project. This is a worldwide project that celebrates International Peace Day (September 21st) by creating beautiful peace pinwheels. This year we made our pinwheels and displayed them inside the building along an entire hallway. The students did a wonderful job reflecting about the violence that occurs all around them and making displays of peace.

Community Art Mural

Designing and drawing are underway for our community mural project. Thanks to Elmer's Glue and The Kids in Need Foundation we will be painting and installing a six panel mural in the front of the building. Each panel will display the six subject areas that we have at Hiatt. More photos to follow as completion comes near.

The students have primed all 12 pieces of wood. They have also painted the back panels black to give the designs a black frame. Next week we will be putting second coats on all of these pieces before we begin drawing and painting our designs.

The Art of Teaching Art

In the next week the 8th graders will be researching and creating their own art lessons for the class. They will be working in groups to create a lesson to share. Below are the resources that I use to find lessons.

www.Pinterest.com
An online pin-board. Use the search button at the top left and search key phrases like "middle school art projects" "awesome art lessons" "great art lessons for kids"

www.incredibleart.org
The Incredible Art Department has fantastic lessons from teachers all over the world. Click on the "Art Lessons" link and then click on "Middle/Junior School.

www.google.com
Using Google can be very successful. Type in key phrases like "middle school art projects" "awesome art lessons" "great art lessons for kids". There is obviously less security using Google. Be very careful about what you are typing in the search bar. If you come across something inappropriate please notify Ms. Rogers.

Doodle Pastel Boards
Doodle Pastel Boards
The projects are turning out wonderful. It is amazing what a student will do if they can choose the project. The students wrote out their lesson proposals and then I signed off on them. After that they were able to gather materials and go crazy. Here are some examples:
